Some of the most common issues with the Traverse are the engine, steering system, oil consumption, brake sounds, as well as transmission issues.
Taking a deeper look into the issues will show you what year models to look out for, as well as what may happen. In 2010 and 2011, the Traverse saw engine issues that gave you a reduction in power, or even stalling out, when driving. If your vehicle were to stall when driving, it would be dangerous as you and others may not have time to react.
The steering issue was mainly a problem in 2011. This would manifest itself as noisy steering, or having a power steering fluid leak.
The oil consumption was a problem that other Chevy models also had to deal with, but for the Traverse, it was during 2011, and 2012. This would cause the Traverse to eat through oil, and if you're not anticipating it, there would be a chance that it could lead to bigger problems.
For a more recent issue, there are brake sounds. Happening in 2020, some drivers had reported hearing noises from the brakes in their brand new Traverse.
Probably the oldest issue on this list is with the transmission. Drivers of 2009 Traverse reported that their transmissions were faulty. These problems ranged from low fluid leaks, to lack of response, hard shifting, and even slipping gears. This issue isn't unique to the Traverse, though. At some point in any model's life, it was almost certain to have seen transmission issues.
Being that it seems that the 2010, and 2011 models are the worst to get, most models after 2013 will serve you well. Making those the safest ones from the issues that we’ve covered here.
