When you’ve got major weight to move, the 2020 Ram 3500 and Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD are prime candidates to get the job done. But since you can only choose one, Coleman Dodge’s comparison guide is here to give you the details on each of these heavy-duty trucks.
Richly Appointed Cabin: 2020 Ram 3500
Ram trucks have long been recognized for their best-in-class interior comfort and style, and the 2020 Ram 3500 is no exception. Seating is always comfy and supportive, and options like leather upholstery and seat heaters take comfort to the next level. And, for a heavy-duty truck, the cabin remains impressively quiet.
Compared to the stylish Ram cabins, the Silverado trim models feel a bit more basic. However, these newly redesigned models are bigger than before — though none offer as much space as the Ram’s optional Mega cabin (an extra-large crew cabin). Like the Ram, Silverado 3500HD also upscale comfort options, like leather seating trim and a heated steering wheel, so you can dress up the cabin a little.
Heavyweight Power: 2020 Ram 3500
If it’s power you’re after, you can’t go wrong with the Ram 3500. This year, there are two engines available, including the standard 6.4-liter gasoline V8 (410 horsepower, 429 pound-feet of torque). To pack the biggest punch, though, you should check out the 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel inline-six. There are two versions of this engine, a standard version (370 horses, 850 pound-feet of torque), and a high-output version (400 horses, 1,000 pound-feet of torque). The latter helps you tow max loads.
While the newly redesigned Silverado 3500HD feels strong and capable on the road, it isn’t as powerful as the Ram 3500. However, its new 6.6-liter gas-powered V8 (401 horses, 464 pound-feet) is more capable than the engine it replaces in the lineup. For extra towing capabilities, you’re going to need the 6.6-liter diesel V8 (445 horses, 910 pound-feet).
Max Payloads: 2020 Ram 3500
To haul more gear, choose the Ram 3500. Payload ratings change according to body style, engine choice, and other equipment. However, with the gasoline V8 and the proper equipment, Ram’s heavy-duty truck hauls max payloads of 7,690 pounds.
Back on the Silverado 3500HD, you can haul up to 7,442 pounds. Depending on how much weight you need to move, the Silverado 3500HD could potentially force you to make more trips to get the same job done.
Max Towing: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD
Whether equipped to tow a conventional trailer or a gooseneck trailer, the Silverado 3500HD gives you maximum towing muscle. Depending on configuration and equipment, Chevy’s heavy-duty truck can tow up to 20,000 pounds of conventional trailer and 35,500 pounds of gooseneck trailer.
The Ram 3500 isn’t too far behind, however. With the Cummins high output engine, this heavy-duty truck can tow up to 35,100 pounds. Equipped with the gasoline V8, the max rating drops to 18,210 pounds.
The 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD might tow max loads, but the 2020 Ram 3500 is the overall winner. In addition to supplying massive power and moving serious weight, Ram’s heavy-duty truck supplies best-in-class comfort. If you want to get the job done in style, you need the Ram 3500.
